The development of a portrait is a collaborative effort between the artist and the client. The process begins with a dialog between the artist and the client in which the details of the portrait and the process are discussed. Things that will be discussed include the number of subjects to be painted, the type and detail of the background and other aspects of the portrait. The artist will provide suggestions on composition that will help to make the completed portrait have a classic and artistic appearance.
It is preferred for the artist to take the photograph if it is reasonable to do so, If not, the client will provide a photograph of the portrait to be painted. It is imperative that the photograph be in sharp focus. Photographs that do not provide sufficient detail will be returned to the client with a description of the deficiencies that need to be corrected. The photograph can be submitted as either an 8" x 10" print or digitally via compact disk or e-mail. If a digital image is submitted, it must be in TIFF format and shot at the highest resolution available on the camera. A three mega-pixel or better camera is strongly suggested.
Once the photograph has been submitted and accepted by the artist, and the terms of the commission are agreed upon, work on the portrait will begin as scheduled.
